The first Miss Navajo crowned was Dr. Beulah Melvin Allen in 1952. At that time, according to Dr. Allen, the selection of Miss Navajo was simple. The selection of Miss Navajo Nation was made by those in attendance at the Navajo Nation Fair. The Navajo Nation Fair is the largest fair on the Navajo reservation which is usually held in September. The contestant who received the most and loudest applause from the audience would be crowned as the new Miss Navajo. Today, the selection is determined over a five day competition filled with anxiety, excitement and nerves. This rich and colorful event has an interesting footnote which is unknown to many people. In some years, there were two reigning royalties at the same time. A young lady served as the modern Miss Navajo and the other as the traditional Miss Navajo. Both positions were prestigious, as it was the responsibility of each to bridge the gap between the outside world and the Navajo Nation. Using the tools of modern technology in practical ways which reflect our traditional values was inherent in there representations. As the years progressed, vying for the title of Miss Navajo Nation became highly publicized and celebrated and was indeed an honor to be the title holder. The benefits and honors derived form this title are tremendous. During the pageant competition, many beautiful traditional skills and talents are demonstrated. The grace, pride, and the teachings of mothers and grandmothers of the Navajo people blossoms and manifest themselves through these fine young ladies. After arduous preparation and competition, a young lady is selected to reign for one year. The most important qualification for the Miss Navajo Nation Pageant is to be fluent in the Navajo and English languages. The contestants must fill the requirement of having knowledge of the Navajo culture and tradition. Unlike most beauty pageants throughout the world, the Miss Navajo Nation pageant is of beauty "within" one's self. For over forty years, the Miss Navajo has accomplished very much in the way of changing relationship between Nations and providing a role model for young people everywhere. Throughout the years, Miss Navajo Nation has represented both symbolic and real life efforts.
